Synopsis
Edit

Added by Gold StarA group of teenagers lead by Reiji Shiratori flee from a bloodied Rin Okumura, who had stopped the gang from killing pigeons in a park. Arriving home to the True Cross Campus Town - Southern Cross Boys’ Monastery, Father Fujimoto scolds the boy for fighting and tells Rin that he is to interview for a cooking job in a friend's resturant. Despite the boy's denial that he is qualified, the elderly priest admonishes him, saying that it is his role to raise him into a responsible adult and that someday Rin will have to fend for himself. Nagatomo, a priest of the monastery, leads Fujimoto to an ailing family. Before his departure, Fujimoto orders Yukio Okumura, Rin's younger twin brother, to patch up his wounds.
In the infirmary, Rin and Yukio discuss the later's departure to high school at the True Cross Academy. The older boy acknowledges that he is trying his best to grow up and make something of himself, just as Yukio is studying to be a doctor. In reply, the younger brother tells him to go to the interview to prove to their father that he can become something. As he departs for the interview (wearing a suit provided by Kyodo), Rin sees Fujimoto giving the young daughter a four-leaf clover charm, telling her that the plant will keep her safe. As Yui leaves with her father, Rin points out that demons don't exist, prompting Fujimoto to tell him that they exist in the form of temptations. Helping Rin fix his tie, Fujimoto tells his foster son that he should show him how much he has grown, to which Rin replies that he will show him that he can get a job. As he departs, the priest crushes a small, airborne black creature and silently calls after the boy.

Added by Gold StarWhile walking through Southern Cross Street, Rin notices that only he can see an enormous amount of the same small, black creatures floating around. The leader of the gang he had defeated appears and calls out to him, sporting demonic horns, a forked tail, and claws. The gang asks Rin for a private discussion. Attempting to bribe him to keep quiet about the fight (due to the gang leader's prospective attendance to True Cross Academy), he badmouths Yukio's admittance by scholarship, prompting Rin to fight him. In retaliation, the gang holds him down while the leader attempts to cut Rin's face with a knife. Fearing for his life, he realizes that the gang leader must be a demon and that he is about to die.

Added by Gold StarBefore the demon begins to cut him, Rin emits bright-blue flames, knocking the crew off him. While the gang flees, the demon smiles and informs him that he has been searching for the fearful teen, telling him that those flames are those of Satan. Out of nowhere, Fujimoto appears to exorcise the demon and prevent it from taking Rin to Satan. After a brief explanation on the existence of demons and their relation to humans, Fujimoto tells Rin that he is a human born between the relations of a demon and a woman-specfically, he is the son of Satan.
Back at the chapel, Fujimoto is preparing supplies for Rin to flee the monastery. Offering him a katana hidden in a drawer, the priest explains that Rin's demonic powers are hidden in the blade's scabbard, properly called Kurikara. Telling him to never unsheathe sword, as it would completely change Rin's life, Fujimoto hands Rin a cellphone with a single number that the boy is supposed to call once he is away from the monastery.

Added by Gold StarOverwhelmed that he is to leave his current life forever, Rin throws down the bag and asks if Yukio has the same powers. The priest explains that, while they are twins, Yukio's weakened nature as a fetus caused Satan's power to be transferred completely to his older brother. Despite Fujimoto's proclamations that all he wanted was for Rin to have a normal life, the teen reveals that he knows that his own existence has been nothing but trouble, and that this demon story is merely a way to get rid of Rin. In the climax of his anger, he tells Fujimoto to never act like his father again.

Added by DookianFed up with Rin's rage, the priest slaps him and exclaims that now is not the time for this. As Rin leaves, Fujimoto collapses, urging him to run away. Running to his aid, the teen stares directly into the blue demonic eyes of the priest, who bursts into a demonic form covered in flames. Satan, Rin's father, reveals that he has possessed the man and calls the boy his son. Laughing at his final acceptance of demons, Satan uses the priest's body as a medium to create a gate to the demon world, dragging his son into it. As the creature points out that Rin will help greatly with his father's goal to overtake the human world, Fujimoto temporarily regains control of his body and stabs himself with the bladed rosary he wears. Before the demon regains control, he proudly announces that Rin is his own son, and that he is taking him back.
As he is dragged into the gate, Rin recalls that he was never able to show his foster father that he has grown up. Yelling for Fujimoto not to die, Rin unsheathes the blade and, in demon form, destroys the gate with his own blue flames.

Added by Gold StarRin, Yukio, and other members of the monastery are seen standing around Fujimoto's grave in the pouring rain, dressed in mourning clothes. Rin, with Kurikara concealed in a leather case wrapped around him, thinks back on his memories of Fujimoto. He then pulls out the cellphone the priest gave him, and dials the number of his friend. Startled, he hears the answering ringtone near him, and looks over as men in black suits have surrounded him.

Added by Gold StarMephisto Pheles, the friend of Fujimoto, greets Rin and offers his condolences. Rin then asks if he will provide protection, but Mephisto says that, as an honorary knight of the True Cross Order of exorcists, he cannot do that. He then goes onto say that as the son of Satan, Rin must be killed. Mephisto offers Rin three options: kill the exorcists there and flee, be killed by them, or commit suicide. Rin then asks Mephisto to let him join the exorcists, saying that his only father was Fujimoto. Intrigued, Mephisto asks Rin what he would do if he became an exorcist, with Rin confidently replying that he would kick Satan's ass. Mephisto bursts out laughing, saying how it is one of the funniest things he has heard in a long time, and begins to seriously consider Satan's son as an exorcist. He then says that he will allow it, but tells Rin that the journey is a long and treacherous one, and that there is no going back. Rin then ends the chapter saying that he is no longer a human, nor a demon, but an exorcist.
