Kawanaka has short, light coloured hair with long sideburns. He has a stern expression and wears glasses. Aside from this, he wears a turtleneck under the standard uniform of an exorcist.
When busy, Kawanaka seems to become easily frustrated, impatiently dealing with those who bother him. Later in the series however, he seems to have mellowed somewhat, as despite still being busy, he is simply brusque and not as irritable.
Impure King Revival arc
Kawanaka was one of the exorcists left in charge of healing the masho affected members of the Kyoto Branch office during the Impure King incident. When Yamagami sent Rin Okumura to him looking for work, he sent him back to Kinoshita.
Exorcist Exam arc
Kawanaka greets Rin and Shiemi, and thanks them for coming as they are short on staff. He then gives them their assignment: To clean a house infested with Coal Tars. Seeing its decrepit state, Rin instead suggests to put down the house and rebuild it, but Kawanaka says their client loves old houses, so they have to do it without damaging the house. Rin replies it's just ruins.
Kawanaka then says he looked around and Koks, the Coal Tar Lord, isn't around, but they're multiplying in high speed. He gives each of them a Holy Water sprinkler and extra tanks, and waves them goodbye as he has another assignment. He says their job will be easy and if anything happens, they can call him. As he runs off, Rin and Shiemi are surprised how overworked the Exorcists are.
After the Exwires complete their mission, Kawanaka is distraught as the house is burning down. Rin apologizes for exaggerating, calling him Kawayama in the process. Kawanaka says that's horrible and corrects him on his name.
