Mephisto Pheles

Er Stopfen (時よ止まれ (エルストフヴェン)  Eru Sutofuven) is a technique used by Mephisto Pheles.

Description[]

A barrier, that once erected, stops all time from passing within.[1] When cast, Mephisto stands atop a giant ornate clock in the center, along with four keys placed around the perimeter which seem to be clocks also. It seems to be sustainable for four to five months, but not without considerable strain on Mephisto. [2] Mephisto first uses this technique to seal off the Particle Accelerator in hopes of slowing down the spread of the artificial Gehenna Gate within the facility. [3]

A smaller scale version of this technique can be enacted without the central clock and using much smaller keys.[4] The power of the technique may be proportional to the force acting upon it, as Lucifer stated this instance of the time stop would not hold for more than twenty seconds.[5]

Trivia[]

  • While literally translated as Er Stopfen, the Japanese phrase Toki yo tomare (時よ止まれ) is the translation of a line from Goethe's Faust Verweile doch, du bist so schön, leading the official English release to translate this technique as "Verweile Doch", the appropriate line from the play from which Mephisto takes much influence.
